Halloween IS October 31st! (And Dr. Dog ticket giveaway!!)

Halloween is a ‘holiday’ that is always celebrated on Oct.31st – no matter if it falls on a Tuesday or if it is snowing! Traditionally, it is a celebration on the night before All Saints Day (Nov.1). This year, in Louisville, we have an interesting situation – bad weather (or more accurately, bad weather is being predicted). The weather forecasters have been telling us for a few days that we should expect rain, wind, hail, and a slight tornado risk. Sounds like JUST the type of weather I want to take my kids out in. Riiiight!

Some of the smaller, incorporated cities in the area have ‘moved’ trick or treating to Friday or Saturday night. The Mayor’s office said that government isn’t in the trick or treating business, so they weren’t making a recommendation on when people should trick or treat. So….there has been a grassroots effort to get the word out about pushing the date back one day – to Friday. I can totally appreciate the thought, idea, and effort people have put into changing it. I don’t want my kids to be in danger. I don’t want to be the bad guy and tell them that they can’t go. I don’t want to disappoint them.

But, you know what? Part of my job as a parent is to prepare my kids to be successful adults. And part of that is learning that life can’t always be perfect and sometimes you have to go with the flow. I haven’t cancelled Halloween for them – I’ve offered an alternative (to have some neighbors over, on Halloween, for chili and indoor trick or treating). The idea of Halloween is dressing up and having fun with friends. Oh, yeah….and getting gobs of candy. They will have all of that, just in a different form. And in the future, I hope the weather is perfect and they look back on this year and think of how much fun it was. Or at least have an appreciation for good Halloween weather!

I also hope they acquire skills that help them problem solve, as well as the ability to be flexible in certain situations. I think our society has set up our kids for failure in adult life by making everything perfect for them. Hello – give every kid a trophy for every sport they play, starting at age 3!! Life isn’t perfect. If this is their expectation, then they are in for a rude awakening! It is much more beneficial to help your kids navigate through life’s ups and downs with the proper tools and expectations than it is to (try to) make them happy all of the time. Give your children something they will really thank you for when they are adults.

The point of this post is not to judge other parents and their decision for their family!! The real point was to work out, for myself, why I was so against moving Halloween. And I am sharing my thought process because I am guessing that I am not alone (okay, so I am hoping that I am not alone!).

Now for the Dr. Dog ticket giveaway! My loss is your gain! I can’t use my tickets for their SOLD OUT show on Saturday night at Headliners in Louisville. So…like my Facebook page, Last Bit Of Sanity, and post what your favorite Halloween costume was as a kid. Or if you like to tweet, then you can tweet it. And if you want to double your chances, share a link to this post (tag Last Bit Of Sanity) on Facebook or Twitter. I will randomly select a winner. I will leave you with a Halloween themed Dr. Dog song, Vampire. Funny how these things come together sometimes. Ha!

Edward Sharpe: review & ticket giveaway!!

A few months ago, I heard the song Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros for the first time. Around the same time, I heard that the band had recently stopped in Louisville, sans show, and hung out with Jim James and Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket. Apparently, they were chilling at the Holy Grale. If you have ever been, then you know how small it is (if you haven’t been…shame on you!!), so it is pretty amusing that Edward Sharpe party of 12, plus Jim and Patrick decided to hang there. That’s right, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are made up of 12 people, including 2 drummers. I never really understood the whole 2 drummers thing, but it totally works for them! I immediate bought tickets to their show at Iroquois Amphitheater and then ordered their CD.

My Morning Jacket isn’ the only band who has taken notice of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.  In April 2011, the band joined Mumford & Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show on the Railroad Revival Tour

Well, fast forward a few months and real life has jumped in the way of fun and it was looking like the show wasn’t going to be in the cards. But then musical magic happened and all things were good again! Hubby and I headed down to the Southern Ground Food and Music Fest in Nashville (another post is coming on that!), and to our pleasant surprise, we were going to get to see Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros after all. And not just see them, but be close enough to touch them!

All I could think about was that Louisville was in for a treat and I was doing to do whatever it took to make sure I saw them again at Iroquois. They were incredible live! It was fabulous to see Edward and Jade singing, dancing, running, and interacting all over the stage. They had everyone in the audience on their feet dancing…their youthful enthusiasm was definitely contagious and I can’t wait to catch it again in a couple of days.

I find it very fitting that their song, Man on Fire, starts with the following lyrics, because you can tell that those lyrics are also the philosophy of the band.

I’m a man on fire
Walking through your street
With one guitar
And two dancing feet
Only one desire
That’s left in me
I want the whole damn world
To come dance with me

And lucky for you, I have two tickets to giveaway for the show so you can experience their spirited singing and entertaining for yourself! Just post on the Last Bit of Sanity facebook page that you want to win. To double your chances, share this on facebook and/or twitter (and while you are at it, check out some of the amazing pictures I got)! A winner will be announced on Wednesday by noon! Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are playing at Iroquois Amphitheater on Wednesday Sept 26th at 8pm. They are being supported by Clap Your Hands  Say Yeah! Tickets are $30.

Ticket Giveaway: Old Crow Medicine Show

I love it when I can give tickets away….it’s fun to make people happy about music!! You’re gonna have to act fast on this one, if you are interested. Old Crow Medicine Show plays at The Louisville Palace on Thursday night. If you want to be entered to win (2) tickets, then go to the Last Bit Of Sanity facebook page, like it and post that you want the tickets. If you want to double your chances, then also share the picture on the Last Bit Of Sanity page (make sure you click ‘public’ on the share). The contest will end at 5pm on Wednesday and the winner will be notified that night.

I have only seen OCMS once and even then it was only for an encore. That was part of our crazy music weekend! The audience at War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville was quite surprised when Mumford & Sons brought out OCMS and proceeded to all rock out to Wagon Wheel…it was awesome!  I was excited to re-live the experience when watching this video. In fact, I am pretty sure I can see myself in the video…we were close to the front! 😉

Ingrid Michaelson ticket giveaway!

Wow. I feel like I am still in Forecastle recovery…it’s hard to think of other musical happenings in Louisville this week. But, the world goes on and there are acts coming to town this week. I am actually embarrassed that I didn’t realize Ingrid Michaelson was coming to town tomorrow night and playing at Headliners.  I was even listening to WFPK this morning when Be OK came on and as I turned it up to sing along. D’oh! Oh well….it’s last minute, at least it’s before the show.

Ingrid is a indie-pop singer-songwriter from New York. Her music has been featured in episodes of several popular television shows, including Scrubs, Bones, Grey’s Anatomy, The Big C, In Plain Sight, and One Tree Hill. Be OK is one of those ear worms that is just so fun to listen to and sing along with!

And if you want to hear Ingrid in person, you can win tickets here!  There are two ways you can win. You can go to the Last Bit Of Sanity facebook page, like it and post that you want to win a pair of tickets to the show. OR you can retweet the @lastbitofsanity tweet about the show. OR you can do both and double your chances! Winners will be announced tomorrow by 4pm.

Ingrid just released a new album, Human Again, and here is Ghosts from that release:

Forecastle ticket giveaway!

The big weekend is almost here….it’s been a long time coming and Louisville is ready! I’ve only been looking forward to this forever and can’t wait to see my favorites, The Head And The Heart, Abigail Washburn, Ben Sollee, Justin Townes Earle, Cheyenne Marie Mize, Lucero, My Morning Jacket, Sleigh Bells, The Features, and Walk The Moon. I am also excited to check out some new (to me) groups like Real Estate, Moon Taxi, Beach House and Andrew Bird.

After a near scheduling disaster (darn my son for being selected to that all-star baseball team!) that nearly made me decide between my son and music, it is all good! And I don’t want to hear “oh, I can’t believe the easy choice wouldn’t be your son.” Of course, I love him more than anything. But, Mama’s gotta have a life too…otherwise Mama might not be so pleasant to be around!

Anyway, I have a general admission Forecastle ticket to give away for Sunday. Go to my facebook page, Last Bit Of Sanity, and like it. Then answer the question posted (who are you most excited about seeing this weekend?). A random winner will be picked on Friday.

Win FIONA APPLE tickets BEFORE they go on sale!!

There has been a lot of hype around Fiona Apple’s newest release, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do (released June 19, 2012). Yes, it has a long and complicated title that matches the music and lyrics you will find inside. (She has a thing for long titles – her second release had an long poem for the title!)But that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has listened to Fiona Apple’s music before. Her deep, sexy voice is alluring and her lyrics are blunt. This album is heavy on the piano and percussion with the main focus staying on the vocals.

Apple has a pretty full tour schedule around this release and it includes Louisville! She will be at The Palace on Friday Oct 5. Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday June 22nd at noon. But, I’ve got a pair of tickets for you to snag before they are on sale! All you need to do is like Last Bit Of Sanity on facebook, like the Fiona photo and post what your favorite show was at the Louisville Palace. I will announce the winner Friday morning at 9:30am!

pushin on with MORE giveaways!!!

We are just rolling with the ticket giveaways!!! And we are not stopping yet! I cannot tell you how excited I am about this next giveaway! We are so lucky to have Ha Ha Tonka joining us in Louisville again!! They were here over the summer for one of WFPK’s Waterfront Wednesdays and that is where I really became a fan. My fan-dom only grew when they graciously let me interview them (you remember…the interview where I had to hide in the garage so the foursome wouldn’t bother me?!)  And it keeps on growing, because not only do I have (2) tickets to giveaway to their show on Feb 3, 2012 at Uncle Slayton’s, but I also have 3 Ha Ha Tonka cds to giveaway!!

Now, here is the deal! Uncle Slayton’s is an intimate setting and can hold a little less than 150. Ha Ha Tonka has developed quite the following in Louisville and this show is only one of a few that they are headlining this winter. So, if you MUST go to this show, you might want to go ahead and get tickets just to make sure you do get them! And if you win the contest, then you will still get the CDs! If you are risk taker, then you can wait…but just so you know, I already have my tickets in hand!

You know the drill….go to the Last Bit Of Sanity facebook page, like it and tell me that you want to win the Ha Ha Tonka tickets and CDs! The contest ends on January 26th at 5pm and a winner will be announced shortly after that.  Good luck! Here they are rockin in a van…you can just imagine how they will rock Uncle Slayton’s!! This song contains some of my favorite lyrics, “if you don’t change where you’re going, you’re gonna end up right where you’re headed”.
